Hello everyone, it's nice to find this thread and join the forum. I just finished some work so here's my setup and experience gained!
1) Below is my setup.
2) I have a question on front door replacement options.
1)
I have a 2007 Sequoia with the JBL system and had the issue of the front right door speaker sounding like it's cutting out. So I set out to upgrade. I didn't like the Bluetooth adapters that plug in so my main priority was a head unit with Bluetooth for Pandora and Spotify. So here's what I did:
- JVC KD-X350BTS 1-Din Car Digital Media Bluetooth Receiver USB/iPhone/SiriusXM($71) Awesome purchase. It has pre-amp outputs and was ready for my 10" sub and its dedicated 500 watt amp.
- Metra TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness (because it's the JBL system this is the harness needed that makes use of the stock amp)
So I installed this into the factory setup and likely due to the front right speaker being bad it sounded horrible, I couldn't get the bass to sound decent, sound quality was difficult to reign in. I lowered the speaker size setting on the head unit to 5" door speakers so the bass strength was reduced. However... I had my sub and amp and went to work installing them. End result was awesome as the sub took care of the bass needs and now the fronts and rears didn't have to bass sent to them. Now I love my setup and the bass is way more than necessary.
- Sony XM-2002GTR 2-channel amplifier
- SoundBox Connected True 4 Gauge Amp Install Kit AWG Amplifier Wiring Complete Cable-SuperFlex 3500W Extra Long 20 Ft. Power Wire (20 foot length was key for the Sequoia, don't go shorter)
- Alpine Type R 10" sub in an enclosed box
- Auto-Vox M6 front mirror cam and rear reverse cam (it was difficult to sort out but finally I have it wired, holy sheet!)
2) I purchased the Rockford R165-S R1 Prime 6.5-Inch 2-Way Component Speaker System but damn they're small (even the magnet) compared to the stock speaker. The door panel has a such a huge opening I don't understand why the websites only show 6.5" speakers being the largest options. This speaker is only 5" in diameter (6" with the surrounding frame), what's up with that. I'd need to create an adapter just to fit the larger opening available in the door. SO............. my question, what's the largest size speaker I could fit in the door's existing mounting piece? The diameter of the opening in the door is 7", and the speaker from end of foam to end of foam is 7.5".
By the way, this speaker connector (Metra 72-8104 Speaker Connector for Select Toyota Vehicles) does not fit what goes to my front door speakers.
So a 6.75-7" inch speaker should be easy to fit into the existing bracket. Anyone recently go with something larger than the recommended 6.5"? If you have questions on wiring the amp, the Metra harness, or the reverse cam let me know. I now have more experience than I planned to get from this install!
Thanks everyone.
