Power steering line fix?

I had a bad power steeing leak and lost all my fluid. Just wondering why there is so much power steering line from factory for the return line?
I just ran a new hose from reseroir to the steel line that hose to the steering rack and it seems to run great. Will this screw up anything in the long run?
