Anyone replace their display with an Apple Car Play unit? How much functionality, if any, did you loose by replacing the OEM unit?

Thanks,

I replaced mine with a Kenwood DMX and did not lose any functionality in an SR5. I noticed the Platinum version of other makes and models can be more difficult to mod because of all the touchscreen controls. Call Crutchfield and they will recommend a unit. The pre-fab harness and install kit is well worth the cost.

I replaced my OEM JBL head unit on my 2008 Platinum for a pioneer wireless CarPlay (w4400nex). Steering wheel controls, backup camera, and JBL amp/speakers all work. I'm currently awaiting a 11.6" joying head unit to replace the pioneer because I want a larger display.....rather, a huge display. It is supposed to be plug and play as well.

Beau- any update on your 11.6" Joying head unit? like/ dislike? What model did you end up getting? I am looking into replacing mine with this too. Thanks

Besides the install, I am loving this thing. The fitment wasn't correct so I had to modify the mounting locations in order to fit the dash space provided. The sound is just as good as the pioneer unit and way better than the stock unit it replaced. The screen size is quite large and very usable for the backup camera and nav/CarPlay. The wireless CarPlay connects about 90-95% of the time, so I'm happy about that. It's hard to imagine this thing only cost $400, especially since its plug and play!

My concern with these Chinese-led brands is component and software quality. The installation effort is the largest project expense so if it becomes problematic in 12 months (warranty or not) cost savings are nullified. Online reviews are mixed which is typical at this price point. Kenwood has options to integrate and control their cameras directly (cable reduction) and you can get prefabbed wiring harnesses (simplified installed), but it is double the price and nowhere near that size display. Your install looks good - I would be interested to hear your review of it at a year.

All the alpine head units are on sale at Best Buy but only in stores not online. I got 900 off the 11 inch.
