Tire, Wheel & Suspension Setup Rubbing Question...

So, here is my setup... Bilstein adjustable 5100’s all around set at the 3rd (middle) notch with 285/70r17’s mounted on the 08’ 4Runner Sport 17x7.5 rims with a +30 offset and G2 1.25” spacers... tire still rubs at full lock on the frame... the people I have consulted said, “just don’t go full lock...”

My question is... will adding more lift or and additional wheel spacer let it clear or will I have to do both. Hoping someone has a helpful solution. Eventually I’d like to go on some trailing adventures with my nephews!

At the moment it is functional without major structural issues... till I find a solution I guess I’ll just have to live with the infrequent rubbing at full lock...

Only suggestion I can add would be to get wheels with a more favorable offset. I don't think you have many options besides that. Sorry couldnt be of more help. Good luck.

Whocares, thanks, that was one of the things I will eventually do, but how will I know what the correct offset is if I don’t know how far from zero offset in the positive/negative direction is enough? Do you know? This was supposed to be a BB lift.

Next, after being to and hearing from three guys “specialists” in their own right, they all either didn’t want to offer bad advice because they had limited knowledge/ experience and were that specialists in with that kind of issue or they said go back to stock...

I was actually going to try switching to another wheel spacer (1.5”) which is less money to figure out what offset will work... One of the guys I had consulted basically said “If you keep on with the trial and error thing you’ll eventually find out what I just thought I’d and/or as I have read others do is go to first or second notch (to not lose travel) and get some suspension lift spacers before figuring out what offset will work... One of the guys I had consulted basically said “If you keep on with the trial and error thing you’ll eventually find out what works and probably still be unhappy... it’s always a work in progress...” I just thought with all these members here, there would have been at least one person here with the knowledge. I’m pretty sure I’m not the first guy that has tried this before... Isn’t this what the forums are for? To share knowledge and our experience? I know the best route would have been to go with what works but with a limited budget this is what happens with BB. I did my research on the BILSTEINS, just not with what works with the tires...

Sorry for the rant, I’m still upset with trying to go higher and getting stuck with only lifting one side, my spring compressor and impact wrench weren’t cooperating.... soooo P.O’d!!!

Whocares, thanks for the FB link, I was just checking out another FB page, “Toyota Sequoia Off-Road” and will definitely check out Sequoia4WD... Thanks again. I’ll definitely update this thread when I finally work out the bugs.

***EDIT: I just found out the FB pages are one and the same...

Hope you get it figured out. I will say that adding bigger spacers can sometimes cause more issues. Also lifting it higher wont solve rubbing on the frame, you'll just rub on a different spot (for the most part) .

Ultimately, you're going to have to address the wheels or tires . But hopefully someone on the FB page will correct me . good luck

What I would do, a cheap way to test if you need more offset- get a few 1/4" spacers from the auto parts store. You could put one 1/4" spacer on top and/or one below the 1.25" spacer. After you find out what works get some Bora spacers that are the exact width you need, they are available in 1/4" increments starting at 3/4".

This was noted in one of Sal's threads, but over on expedition portal there are pics of modifications to clear larger tires. It's worth registering to see the info from Jose Wong and Sal.

https://expeditionportal.com/forum/...ure-cab-build-adventure-thread.127989/page-50

I'll be doing this after my 275/70/17 BFGs wear out and I get some 285s. I'm also considering a 1" body lift in addition to modifying the front mud flap area for more clearance. Roger Brown, 4crawler, makes body lifts in various sizes and should be able to put together something for the sequoias. https://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BodyLiftKit.shtml

Right now I have OME 2885 springs on Bilstein 5100s on the lowest perch up front and OME 2862 rear springs with Bilstein 5100s in the back. Eventually I'll get some longer rear shocks, like Dobinsons, and install my extended brake lines in back. Extended front brake lines from Crown are on the front already and working well.

My 275/70/17s rub on the frame on tight turns and although wheel spacers would help with this I will not run wheel spacers. I'll get new wheels with the new tires. Like you, I've been reading on the proper offset/backspacing for the new wheels. Not sure what offset I'll need for the 285s, but on Josh's website, 1stgenoffroad.com he carries aftermarket wheels with offsets such as -12, -6, and 0. My understanding is that all of these push the wheel away from the frame compared to the positive offset of most Toyota wheels.

Thanks desertrunner04. I too am running that setup in ghe rear and will actually be installing the 885’s up front and will be trying the 1.5 spacers and diff drop this weekend.

I’ve read and watched the writeups “1stgenoffroad” has posted, but he too still has the frame rub issue...

If what I have doesn’t clear the frame at full lock I also have a 2” lift adapter for the front and an 1” and 2” for the rear... everything for now is trial and error until I figure things out... I hope I won’t need to go with the 2” adapter on top of the 885’s that woul probably be to hard on the CV joints and drive shafts... Once I figure this out and get it dialed in it’s on to the next thing... I’ll keep updating my progress. Whether it worked or what’s next.

I presume you are running the stock Sequoia split 5 spoke wheels? I'm planning on running a similar-ish setup so I'm curious as to what hurdles lay ahead of me.

Actually, no. I did it a little different... I have the 08 4Runner Sport 17x7.5 wheel with which I think have the 30mm offset. So, the 1.25” spacer I had should have put the wheel at around ZERO offset and with the new 1.5” spacer at about -8 mm offset with the same wheel.

Yeah... I saw that up top. I was quoting/asking desertrunner04 ;)

will the 2885s fit a sequoia on 5100's using the stock upper strut plate? Or do you need to get a different strut upper plate?

It will fit your factory upper strut mount and rubber isolator with some trimming of the inner rubber. I just bought some Energy Suspension isolators for a 2000 4runner or PN:9.6104G, you will probably need a new strut mount as they are usually oblonged out.
